Sound educational practice for any group of students is based on knowing the needs of the learner and providing appropriate curriculum and strategies for addressing those needs. The Plan for the Education for the Gifted in Goochland County seeks to identify students whose extreme potential, ability and/or achievement would indicate that their educational needs might be different from those addressed in the typical classroom.
1. Provide differentiated instruction responsive to student ability and learning needs.
2. Assist students in achieving their maximum potential.
3. Provide a continuum of service options.
4. Address the social and emotional needs of the gifted student.
5. Support an educational environment that enables students to perform at levels of excellence.
This after school program gives students the opportunity to create and program a robot to complete a series of tasks. Teams of up to ten students between the ages of 9 and 18, tackle real-world engineering challenges. Each team is given a task that scientists are currently grappling with in their own labs. They work together to find a solution, research a current related topic and present it at the competition. This program teaches design basics, research skills, teamwork, and creativity. In 2009-10 we had three elementary teams and three middle school teams compete at the regional level. The Goochland Elementary Robotics team won first place for Robot Design while the team from Randolph won first place in Teamwork Division I Award and second place in the tournament. One of the middle school teams won the 2nd Place Teamwork Division II. Byrd Elementary took the Division I Championship Award and went on to compete at the State Championship at James Madison University. Destination ImagiNation is an after school enrichment program that encourages teamwork, builds problem solving skills and enhances creativity. Students participate in a challenge of their choice and work with their teammates and mentor to come up with a creative solution. The challenges range from technical to theatrical. Managers guide the team but the students are responsible for coming up with a solution and presentation. An important part of the program is the instant challenges. Students are given a task or a scenario and have a short amount of time to come up with a solution or a skit. They use the materials provided and quickly present or create what their team has decided upon. This teaches them to think on their feet, problem solve and work as a cohesive team.
Teams typically meet once or twice a week to practice instant challenges and work on their presentation for the judges. Students in K-12 can participate in this program. We currently have six elementary teams practicing to compete at the regional level on March 13, 2010. If you would like more information about this program please visit their website.
The Reading Olympics Program is designed to promote reading, teamwork, self-confidence and enjoyment of reading. There are books on the list for all reading abilities. All students in grades 4 through 8 are encouraged to become a Reading Olympics team member and take part in the activities. The Olympians will work in teams to collectively read from the list of 35-40 books between September and March. Teams will be asked questions about the books during tournaments.
