As we have settled into the 2010-11 school year, I would like to welcome all students and families. A new school year is a time of excitement and a time of challenge. I know that the faculty and students are extremely excited about the new multipurpose room and the outdoor learning lab in the courtyard. We are also please to note that once again BES has been named a Title 1 Distinguished School because of our great academic achievement. The Byrd staff looks forward to the honor of working with the students, families, and community to provide another year of educational opportunities and a quality education for the students in our school. We strive to offer the type of education that allows each student to have the courage and academic understanding to reach for any goal and overcome any challenge!
Reminders to make the year as successful as possible:
The school day starts at 8:00 and ends at 3:00. Students may begin entering the building at 7:50.
Please make sure that you constantly review the school, bus, and classroom expectations with your child. The basic rules are to respect others; keep hands, feet, and other objects to yourself; be prepared for learning with necessary supplies and materials; stay seated; raise hand and wait to be recognized. It is vital that your child follows the directions of the bus driver. Explain to them the consequences of distracting the driver.
It is vital that students attend on a daily basis in order to get all of the necessary academic instruction; however, if students are sick, they need to stay home and arrangements will be made to complete any missed assignments. Please make sure that you send a note to school letting us know the reason for the absence.
Students are tardy at 8:20 and are considered as an early dismissal until 2:55. Please remember it is a disruption not only to your child, but also to other students as well as the teachers when your child is tardy or dismissed early. If you must pick up your child(ren) early, please make sure that a note is sent to school. Once you report in the office, the office personnel will be responsible for calling your child(ren) to the office.
Dismissal is at 3:00. If you are going to pick up your child, the safest method is to use the car rider line. It is not as safe and orderly when those picking up students are standing in the hallway or outside on the walkways. This causes our dismissal procedures to not be as effective and efficient because our attention is focused on unfamiliar adults rather than our students.
Bus changes (stops or a change of bus) must be approved in advance by the transportation department. The number is 556-5361. Secretaries do not have the authority to make these changes.
Notify school if staying for extra curricular activity at the onset of activity. Example: “My daughter, Jane Doe, will be staying for Girl Scouts every Tuesday until further notice.”
When students are returned on the bus or car riders and not picked up by 4:15 pm or when students are habitually being left at school after dismissal, we are obligated to file a report with Social Services.
Adhering to the above guidelines minimizes interruptions of your child’s instructional time and enables your child(ren) the best education possible while keeping them safe. Please understand the safety and welfare of our students is the top priority.
Please know how much we appreciate all that you do to assist us in educating our students. We plan to have an outstanding year!!!!
