Goochland High School has been selected as a winner of the 2012/2013 Follett Challenge. The fourth place showing among 115 schools nationwide brings GHS an award of $25,000 in Follett products and services.
According to their website, the Follett Challenge looks to reward schools that are “expertly aligning their curriculum to teach 21st century learning skills.” With this in mind, Media Specialist Deb Cross, Library Assistant Joanne Diterlizzi, and Instructional Technology Coach Bea Cantor set out to showcase the Library Media Center’s role in the successful nurturing of 21st Century Skills at GHS. Throughout the fall semester, Ms. Cross and her colleagues documented the day-to-day happenings at the LMC. As part of the application process, they collaborated to write a series of essays to introduce contest judges to the culture of innovation and collaboration that makes our school unique.
The final piece of the application was made possible through the participation of dozens of students, faculty members, and administrators. With help from Russ Gambino, a very talented singer, Ms. Cross and Ms. Cantor created a fun video highlighting the wide variety of resources and events available to everyone at the LMC. The video received thousands of votes at the Follett website thanks to the support of the entire GCPS community.
Congratulations to the entire GHS community on this exciting win.

Even as students and teachers were counting down the minutes to Spring Break, everyone was busy teaching and learning all the way to the bell.
Mrs. Yearout-Patton’s students had a guest speaker on Thursday. Pamela Cooke Johnson, Goochland County Treasurer, visited with the students to discuss property taxes and the importance of paying them on time. The discussion centered on vehicle taxes, something very relevant to our students. Ms. Johnson warned the students about the dangers of ignoring tax bills and shared some strategies for reducing tax liability by tracking mileage.
On Friday, students in Mr. Gordon’s class presented their recycling project to the school leadership team. Students have calculated the costs and benefits of recycling waste from athletic events at GHS, something that has not been done until now. A team of students, with help from the community, has arranged to have special recycling bins to reduce the amount of plastic bottles and food containers going to the county landfill.
The students are excited enough about this project to jump up on the counter to make their point during their presentation.
Congratulation to Rachelle Hope, the winner of the GHS Black History Month Trivia Contest organized by Mrs. Yearout-Patton and her students.
Rachelle received a planner, gift card to Books-A-Milion and a book about the Civil Rights Movement. A big thank you to all who participated, and the students and staff who helped oversee the contest.
On March 16, Mrs. Black’s students participated in the Health Occupations Student Association competition in Williamsburg. This was the first time Goochland students participated in this event. Students competed in the Sports Medicine, Medical Terminology, and Medical Spelling categories.
Senior Monique Morman earned the 4th place in the Sports Medicine category. She is in her fourth year as a member of the Student Athletic Training program. Monique plans to study Athletic Training at James Madison University in the fall.
Congratulations, Monique!

The students are very proud of their hard work, and performing in front of a large audience would be great preparation for their performance in front of the judges.
Come out and support the Wind Ensemble and Concert Band students.
