How Many?

As part of their unit of study on World War II, students in Mr. Derrico’s and Ms. Gargiulo’s classes are learning about the Holocaust.

This morning they examined the number of children that died in extermination and concentration camps. To do this, they printed asterisks on sheets of paper, each representing a child. Each page held 10,530 lives. They printed enough pages to represent 1.5 million children and taped the pages together. The continuous length of asterisk-covered pages was unrolled to extend the length of the hallway.

It was a moving experience to see the students look up and down the hallway, and down at the paper covered in tiny stars.

To represent all the people killed during the Holocaust, the students would need to make twelve more rolls like this one.
