We will administer the SOL Writing Test on March 9th -10th. Our students and teachers have been preparing throughout the year for this two - part assessment. On March 9, 2011 students will begin with a multiple - choice test based on the Writing Curriculum. On Thursday March 10th students at GMS will join in with students across the state in a writing prompt. We will hold all students in Block 1 both days, to minimize movement in the hallways, ensuring all students have an environment conducive to testing.
I would encourage you over the next few days to discuss the importance of this test with your child. As stated in our policy students who fail an SOL will be retained for the current academic year. Students have been given various sources to use as preparation for the upcoming test; I would devote a minimum of 20-30 minutes each night to review this material.
We will provide each student with two number two pencils, scratch paper, and a dictionary for their use as needed. Research supports the correlation between rest and student achievement. I encourage each student to get at least eight hours of sleep the night before each test. We will begin our testing sessions at 8:30; any student arriving after this time will not be permitted to test. We will hold sessions for late buses allowing those students to test as scheduled. Students who report to school late or are absent will be assigned a make up session on March 11th. I encourage you to make every effort to have your student arrive on time and counted present these two days. If you have pre-scheduled appointments, it would be beneficial to your child to reschedule for a later date.
