Living Through History

Tuesday, January 20, 2009 was an important day in American history: Barack Obama became the 44th President of the United States of America.  He was the first person of African-American descent to have this honor.  Classes were tuned in to the television and Internet watch the festivities in Washington, D.C. and see President Obama take the Oath of Office.  Every teacher in the school took the opportunity to make the most of this “teachable moment” so that students will remember this significant occasion.

In addition to watching the live news coverage, activities included…

  • analyzing political cartoons, reading newspaper articles, and reading non-fiction books about Presidents and the White House with Mrs. S. Vaughan in Library classes;
  • writing poems and making books about President Obama in Mrs. Wilckens’ 1st grade class;
  • Miss Smith and Mrs. Gentry traveled to Washington, D.C. to participate in the festivities and share their experiences with the students;

    Love and Logic Parenting Classes

    Parenting with Love and Logic
    Goochland County offers the Love & Logic parent education program on an on-going basis throughout the community.  The program is designed as an interactive series of 4 sessions.

    The workshop helps parents to provide a nurturing environment which encourages children to make healthy choices.  It is based on a win-win approach to parenting that teaches young people how to be responsible. The youth wins by learning how to effectively solve their own problems and by gaining confidence in their ability to make good choices.  The parent wins by learning how to establish healthy controls and set limits without getting into power struggles with their child.

    The Love & Logic program is free.  Refreshments and a resource manual will be provided, in addition to fun, fellowship, and helpful information for parents of children of all ages.

    Our Next Session:
    6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
    Tuesdays - October 16, 23, 30 & November 6, 2007
    at the Goochland County Public School’s Specialty Center-located on Route 6 between Goochland Elementary School & the Goochland Administration Building.
