Grandparents Night

Kids!  Invite your grandparents to spend time with you at RES!

On the night of October 20th, students will give their grandparents a tour of the school and show off what they’ve been learning.  After a brief PTA meeting, students will take their grandparents to their classrooms to meet their teachers and share some of the work they’ve been doing in class.  Then students will guide their grandparents throughout the school to get refreshments and visit their other classes - including PE, Art, Music, and Library!

A is for Art

The next time you visit RES, be sure to take a moment to admire the amazing artwork our students have been creating!

Art teacher, Mrs. Edmonds, has been working with her kindergarten students to teach them about Piet Mondrian.  Students have been creating pieces in the same style.

Other kindergarten art is popping up all over the school, too.  The kindergarten teachers are doing an amazing job incorporating art into the language arts, science, math, and social studies curriculum.

Recycle Roadrunners Contest

Dear Teachers and Staff,

Once again RES is participating in the Goochland Anti Litter and Recycling Council’s Newspaper Recycling Contest. The official contest begins Thursday, October 1 and runs thru May 31, 2010. The RES Roadrunners Recycle Contest starts this month, September.  Please feel free to start sending in your items to be recycled now.  This year not only can newspapers and inserts be recycled, but also magazines, white paper, and catalogs!

Teachers will be working with their students to measure the number of inches their classes collect during the month of September. At the end of each month they will send send the total amount of inches of recycled goods to Mrs. Ware. Each month, the homeroom with the most inches collected will get a treat! Then at the end of the contest, the teacher of the homeroom collecting the most inches during the entire contest will receive a gift card to somewhere special.

If parents place the recycling items in the red bin in the back corner of the parking lot, they need to let the teachers know how many inches they placed in it.

Byrd Elementary School placed first last year.  The top three schools from Goochland and Powhatan counties that recycle the most will win prizes. Last year we placed second in the district.  Let’s try to do that again!  Remember, we are doing this right now, and prizes for September will be handed out at the end of the month.

Thank you for your support of this worthwhile school and community project.

Mrs. Ware,
RES Representative to Goochland Anti Litter and Recycling Council

Special Guest Readers

Fridays are packed with excitement at RES.  Every Friday a Special Guest Reader will be visiting the library-media center to read to our students.

The first Special Guest Reader of the year was Tom DeWeerd, the GCPS Director of Secondary Education.  He shared some of his favorite children’s stories with students from 9:30 to 10:45 AM on Friday, September 18th.

For more information and photos of Mr. DeWeerd’s visit, please go to the Reading Rocks!  RES Lanugage Arts Committee blog.

RES loves to READ

Over 130 students from RES participated in the Field Day of the Past “Read To Win” program!  There were more than 200 participants countywide from our elementary schools!

Each student who turned in a form before September 15th will receive a goody bag.  The bags include a blue ribbon - for students to wear to the fair, an admission ticket, and an additional free treat from the fair!

On Sunday, September 20th at 3:00 PM, the certificates will be given out at the fair. Students should wear their blue ribbons to this special event. Please plan on joining us to celebrate our readers!  The building for this event is located by the post office at Field Day of the Past.  There will be a “Read to Win” sign up by the building.  Unfortunately, the info for our program is not in the Field Day of the Past newspaper with the schedule.

Hope to see you at Field Day of the Past on Sunday!  The students would love your support!

Welcome New Teachers

Left - Right:  Amie Potter, Cindy Edmonds, Amanda Steeley, Rebecca Raab

Be sure to stop by the following classrooms and say hello to our wonderful new teachers!

Amie Potter, Kindergarten
My name is Mrs. Amie Potter. I truly value education and think that learning can be a magical experience for everyone. I have an undergraduate degree from SUNY Fredonia in Elementary Education as well as a MED in Educational Leadership/Administration from VCU. I have six years teaching experience in Richmond and have been lucky enough to intern in classrooms in southern England as well as New York City. I am so excited to be teaching kindergarten at Randolph Elementary. Some of my favorite things to do are traveling, reading, spending time with my family, and playing sports.

Cindy Edmonds, Visual Art
I hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from James Madison University and an endorsement in art education, K-12. My family includes husband Peter, daughter Laurel, and 2 rescue animals. I enjoy living in Goochland County, traveling with my family and eating my husband’s wonderful Gelati Celesti Ice Cream! I am very happy to be working with the teachers, students and families at Randolph this year.

Amanda Steeley, Special Education
I spent the past two and a half years teaching at The Faison School for Autism in Richmond. I am very excited to now be working in the Goochland community, where I have lived for the past 4 years. I am inspired by my students and hope that my experience with autism can help students of all needs.  I received my undergraduate degree in Mass Communications from VCU and am currently taking graduate courses in Special Education.

Rebecca Raab, English as a Second Language
My name is Rebecca Raab and I have just completed my M.ED in Second Language Learning with a concentration in English as a Second Language. I am so excited and ready to begin working with all the ESOL learners, their parents, and of course the faculty and staff at RES. I am a huge fan of running, kayaking, and swimming. In fact, I am happiest in the middle of a river floating along in my green kayak. I have a great family! My parents and brother live in Halifax County, Virginia, which is about 1.5 hours south of Goochland. I am new to the Richmond area and have already begun to enjoy the beauty and bounty of the James River!
