Mrs. Sandra Crowder is principal of Randolph Elementary School in Crozier, Virginia
I am responsible for providing educational leadership, building management, community out-reach, staff evaluation, professional development, school budget, inventory control analysis, communication of state and federal mandates, test analysis, as well as the safety and security of Randolph Elementary School!
I was born and raised in rural Mecklenburg County, Virginia. I spent a lot of time with my grandmother, who taught me to do many practical things, but who could not help me with homework because she never went to school. Being raised in an environment of illiteracy taught me the power of public school. If my grandmother had been afforded the opportunity to attend school, she could have had more choices in her adult life.
My sister was born when I was thirteen. Until then, I had been an only child. Through that experience, I became called to the teaching profession. I found great joy in teaching my sister to read, making prop boxes for her imaginary play, and taking her on excursions. When she went to kindergarten, I went to college, where I majored in early childhood education.
After college, I began teaching in Hanover County Public Schools, where I served as a second grade teacher, a fourth grade teacher, a fifth grade teacher, and a gifted resource teacher. During that time, I married my husband, Michael, and had two children, Caroline and Eric. I then spent two years in administration in Hanover, coordinating the district gifted program and serving as acting assistant principal. Throughout my tenure as an educator, I have learned the importance of a culture of caring and a dedication to differentiation.
