2011 National School Bus Safety Week this year is October 17 through October 21.
Virginia Governor, Robert F. McDonnell, has signed a proclamation and calls on all Virginia motorists to exercise cooperation and caution when near school buses during National School Bus Safety Week.
Betty Thurston, Supervisor of Transportation, would like to remind everyone of the important role they play in providing the safe transportation of our students. We are very fortunate in Goochland to have parents, family members, school administration, local law officers, and citizens as part of our support team.
Helpful Tips for School Bus Riders:
- Arrive at the bus stop five minutes early.
- Stand at least 5 giant steps (10 feet) away from the edge of the road. The bus driver and others cannot see you if you are standing closer than 10 feet to the bus. Stay out of the danger zone!
- If something falls under or near the bus, tell the driver. NEVER try to pick it up yourself!
- Be alert to traffic. When you get on or off the bus, look left, right, left before you enter or cross the highway/street.
- Make eye contact with the bus driver, and wait for the bus driver’s signal before crossing in front of the bus.
- Wait until the bus stops, the door opens, and the driver says it’s okay before stepping onto the bus and then quickly be seated.
- Walk in front of the bus; never walk behind the bus to cross the highway/street.
- Be careful that clothing with drawstrings and book bags with straps or dangling objects do not get caught in the handrail or door when exiting the bus.
