Chosen from among these teachers, Darlene Martin, who teaches Kindergarten at Randolph, was chosen as the 2011 Goochland County teacher of the year! In the photo below, Mrs. Martin is receiving a monetary award from the Goochland Education Foundation by Ms. Elizabeth Nelson-Lyda.
Mrs. Martin started her career in King and Queen County as a third grade teacher in 1978. She began teaching in Goochland the following year and has been teaching here for over thirty years. Although Mrs. Martin started as a third grade teacher, she has taught Kindergarten for the majority of her career. She is dedicated to her students and to Randolph Elementary School. She has volunteered on numerous committees through the years. Awards Mrs. Martin has received are: Teacher of the Year 1994, Rotary Educator of the Year, WXEX Golden Apple Award and the Virginia Congress of Parents and Teachers Life Membership Award. Mrs. Martin shared at the meeting that she enthusiastically loves her profession even after over 30 years in the classroom. She also feels that she has a very simple teaching philosophy: “Teach every child!”
Congratulations to our teachers of the year and Mrs. Martin! Photos credit: Connie Foreman.
