EdTechDid you attend EdTech 2007 in Ashland? If so, please contribute a paragraph below—telling us what you learned, reflections on the conference, etc. Please sign your name with your paragraph. I plan on using these in an upcoming TechTimes. I may also come interview you for a podcast. Thanks for participating! I attended a session on incorporating podcasts into your curriculum. Two very creative teachers who use podcasting and video podcasting in their classrooms on a weekly basis did the session. They had an idea that I would love to integrate into my weekly plans next year. They have a rotating group of 3 students who put together a weekly podcast reviewing the material covered each week. I thought it was a very creative way to keep the students accountable for the information and reviewing on a weekly basis. All of the discussion we had in the session helped me come up with an idea for a podcasting project in my class that I’m starting tomorrow. I’m dividing my kids into 16 groups of 3. Each group is assigned an area of review for the sol test. (Commas, Fragments, Types of Writing, Writing Process, Testing Tips) They are going to pull all of their notes on their particular area then create a script reviewing the material. I will review the script, and they will record the podcast. I am going to post all the podcasts on my blog so that students can review weak areas before the test on the 6th and 7th. Jenn Abbott - English 8 I attended a session on digital journaling. I thought that it was a very interesting session and it gave wonderful ideas on how to get students to be more creative in their writing. The way that they showed us how to do this was to put up a picture prompt on the overhead. Then have the children write about the picture prompt. They described how children retain more information when they use most of their senses. Which is a concept that makes since but I have never thought about. I have done this type of digital journaling with a group of 5th graders this week and found that they really were more creative and wrote their stories easier with the picture prompt then they did when I gave them a sentence to write about. Amanda Henley - RES I attended a session on copyright which always seems to be an issue for students and teachers. It is always good to hear a refresher on what is within fair use laws and what is not considered fair use. I especially liked a website that was given " A Visit to Copyright Bay"--http://www.stfrancis.edu/cid/copyrightbay/ which gives an interesting way to share copyright rules with teachers. I also attended the session that Jenn wrote about. It was great--and she has some great ideas to use podcasting in her class.- Deb Cross, GHS I attended EdTech on the first day, and saw a great presentation by two Henrico teachers focused on using blogs in the classroom. Tom Woodward is an ITRT (instructional technology resource teacher) from Byrd Middle. His website has a lot of great, cutting-edge content: I also had the pleasure of presenting with Dr. Morgan. You can listen to our session via podcast here: - John Hendron I also attended the session on copyright issues. The website Deb mentioned is a fun, interactive approach to this important topic. Highlighting some of the information at future faculty meetings might help remind teachers of the dos and don'ts. Kudos to Jenn Abbott and Deb Cross for giving one of the best presentations I attended at EdTech! Even though I've taught Digital Storytelling before, Deb and Jenn gave me a few pointers to make my future lessons go more smoothly (ie - using a story board to visualize the story prior to working in iMovie). Susan Plowcha, RES I was very pleased with my experience at the EdTech conference. I especially enjoyed the Wacky websites Redux conducted by Midge Liggan. I also went to the session on Google Earth and Unitedstreaming. I really enjoyed this session the most. I learned several tips for using Google Earth. Kimberly Gentry |
